You may be too young to recall the rage for Carmex, which was at its height in the 70's-80's. That's where that theory about drying agents came from-- because that's what Carmex is designed to do! However, the idea is to dry a cold sore, not the skin of your lips. It has alum in it, or used to, but something emollient, too, which was good for preventing chapping. Here's a great site about it: http://www.kevdo.com/lipbalm/carmex.html

I was just thinking about Carmex the other day, in fact. It came in a cool little milk-glass jar (I have a suspicion it's changed to plastic, but haven't seen a fresh pot myself in years), and had a fragrance which was largely responsible for its addictive quality, IMO-- a blend of vanilla and menthol.

Hi Brittany, I echo your comment. If girls were empowered from a young age to believe that their bodies are beautiful and they are perfect the way they are, it would be a much different world.

You may be interested in checking out Lauren Greenfield's Documentary "Thin" or her book "Girl Culture". Both of these are fantastic references for the topic you are researching. Best of luck with your paper, if you would like to have it featured on maryelise.com, send me a message via our contact page and we can discuss this.

Kind Regards,
Mary Elise

This article is great! I'm doing a paper on teenaged girls and the media. Girls are always compairing themselves to the rediculously and deadly thin models that have been digitaly edited. The only body isn't just the flat, tiny, figureless body. Girls need to realize that. Everyone's body is full of imperfections, but just because your body isn't size zero doesn't mean you're not beautiful. Girls need to stick together and show that our bodies are perfect just the way they are. Plus, beauty isn't only skin deep, it's what's on the inside that truely counts. Thanks again for making a difference. =]
